This definition is an entry to considering what professionalism is and demonstrates the lofty goals of professionalism in this article i review other definitions of professionalism consider specific behaviors that demonstrate the values of professionalism and focus on aspects of teaching professionalism to medical students and residents. Teaching professionalism is not so much a particular segment of the curriculum as a defining dimension of medical education as a whole sullivan wm 2009 p xi why teach professionalism the past half century has seen major changes in the practice of medicine. Conclusions our results suggest that the teaching of professionalism in undergraduate medical education varies widely although most medical schools in the united states now address this important topic in some manner the strategies used to teach professionalism may not always be adequate. Medical professionalism in todays society requires the exhibition of a range of qualities deployed in the service of patients rather than more traditionally defined aspects such as mastery . Until recently professionalism was transmitted by respected role models a method that depended heavily on the presence of a homogeneous society sharing values this is no longer true and medical schools and postgraduate training programs in the developed world are now actively teaching professionalism to students and trainees
